Visa timeline

Initiated in 1958, Visa is competed only by Mastercard as the leading card payment network. Unlike other networks such as Discover and American Express, Visa and Mastercard are utilized primarily as networks that connect cardholders and issuers to merchants. Issuers such as Chase, for example. partner with Visa and Mastercard to further conduct a business, via network connecting to merchants and the issuers granting the cards.

Visa produced a set of rules that govern the participation of financial institutions in its network payment system. Acquiring banks are responsible for ensuring that their merchants comply with the rules.
